Understand the relevance of functions to real-life Investigate the properties of linear, quadratic and exponential functions Make connections between the numerical, graphical and algebraic representation of these functions Manipulate functions in a number of ways and apply their skills to solve real-world problems
Conceptual Framework
connections model, representation in the context of globalization and sustainability
Statements of Inquiry
Modelling using relationships helps us to understand world-interconnectedness

What is the graphical significance of changing the coefficients in a particular function?
Conceptual
Decision-making can be improved by using mathematical functions

Can mathematics be used to improve the trajectory of a basketball free throw?
Description
Students will explore the characteristics of graphs in terms of developing and interpreting mathematical models. They will learn how to investigate relationships in data and analyze the shape of a graph to predict future trends, occurrences and to describe the impact of decision-making on humankind and the environment. Students will be encouraged to reflect on the opportunities and tensions provided by world-interconnectedness.
